Event Showcases Student Success

Tuesday October 1, 2019

Industry Projects are an integral component of the SHIFT programme and give students the opportunity to gain valuable connections and world-class work experience.

We heard first hand from our students and their industry mentors, about the trials, learning and successes of their SHIFT Industry Projects.

The SHIFT students completed a variety of projects:

Julie Stalker's project was with Hopskip, a tourism site which provides tools for tourism operators to promote their business.    She is now employed within a financial services firm in Christchurch, Julie commented on her project work:

‘Learning is the name of the game’

Carl Dodds was kept busy developing an end-user connection monitoring portal for ISP's supported by Craig Goodenough from RCG Creations,  where he is now employed, alongside  2017 SHIFT graduate Harry Taylor.  Carl found that the industry project valuable:

'It was a real confidence boost'

Dewi Bealing worked on a machine learning project with Vincent Wang  at the Christchurch City Council, to help classify GIS image data as part of a wider environmental modelling project.  Dewi is pleased to have had the chance to work within a government organisation and is now employed as a librarian Selwyn District Libraries with a technology focus:

'I built up my transferable skills'

Oscar Vanhanen developed a dashboard for displaying user data and in-app analytics/statistics supported by Gwyn Edwards, CTO at LootWinner.  The industry experience  was relevant and empowering:

'I developed many skills including Agile, coding techniques  & working as part of a team'

Peter McGill created an API to help the City council surface data to end-user Enable Networks allowing them to improve the speed of delivery and improve productivity supported by Industry mentor Adrian Dawson - Christchurch City Council

The opportunity for graduates to gain experience within industry is vital for New Zealand's talent pool to keep growing, so that we remain an innovative, competitive player in the digital world.   We would like to thank our valuable industry hosts for their ongoing support.
