The Show Must Go On!

Tuesday May 5, 2020

Working/studying from home with the demands of family life can be a juggle and we are proud of our students. With the new terrain comes the new tech skills, enhanced problem-solving skills, leveling up of communication skills and team collaboration.

"We have had the opportunity to try out different online tools, Trello/Microsoft Teams/Zoom and this is a bonus. The Lecturers have been really supportive and available. Being able to share screens is a huge advantage without this I am not sure how it would work. In saying this, I am looking forward to a time when we can meet in person" SHIFT Student

Whilst learning remotely we had continued to have strong industry support for the SHIFT programme and a number of organisations have pivoted in-person workshops and talks, to online versions for us.

Agile training with Kay Johnson from Assurity Consulting:

"It was very useful and we are able to carry out plans like how Kay taught us" SHIFT Student
"I really enjoyed Kay's session and I am so grateful that she was willing to do it online. I can imagine it's even better when she runs the one day workshop in person"

Martyn Rivett's talk, Living at the pointy end: reflections on navigating a career in uncertain circumstances:

"Very interesting, I would really like to read the report he has written and I have ordered a couple of his recommended books. I thought the material he provided after the course was very helpful"

Design Thinking Workshop with Mick Abbott of Lincoln University:

“This was my favourite part of the course so far! I have read all Mick's recommended reading and am very excited that the tools he outlined are available to us to implement when working with end users and designing new concepts. I am keen to adopt the "Human Centered Design Approach" in my future work”

Intro to LinkedIn Session with Lenore Wright of SIGNAL:

"It has given me the 'push' that I need to get it set up. As soon as the assignment is completed it's my next project"

Industry guest speaker, Lee Stevens from Brighter Days:

"Another take on the Christchurch technology scene is always very useful, especially as he was a mentor of a former Shift student"

"I am familiar with his products and enjoyed his talk. It was reassuring to see a company thriving in the current circumstances"

The Christchurch SHIFT Cohort are working hard and stepping out of comfort zones and getting on with it in the current climate.
