The Global Game Jam (GGJ) runs 31 January - 2 February, 2020, and is the world's largest game creation event taking place in hundreds of physical locations across the globe. Think of it as a 48 hour game development hackathon for newbies, professionals and everyone in between. Check out this short video to see how it works:
GGJ’s mission is to stimulate innovation, experimentation, and collaboration in games. The annual event begins on a Friday afternoon in January and kicks off with video keynotes and advice from leaders in the game development industry. The jam formally begins after an announcement of the year’s theme, kept secret until the last second, and not revealed publicly until 5pm at our last time zone to start: Hawaii!
The 2020 Dunedin Global Game Jam is proudly sponsored by SIGNAL ICT Grad School, Otago Polytechnic Information Technology and the NZ Centre of Digital Excellence (CODE).
In January 2019, there were 860 locations in 113 countries and 9,010 games were created in one weekend! At the time of writing, there were 7085 jammers registered in 617 jam sites located in 94* countries participating in GGJ 2020, and this number is growing daily!
The jam is known for fostering friendships while increasing confidence and opportunities within participating communities. Each GGJ event poses an intellectual challenge where people are invited to try new technology and tools while exploring new roles and skills.
You don't need to be a coder to take part in the Global Game Jam! Writers, artists, animators, musicians, designers and more are all welcome. Under 18's may attend, but will need to have an adult on site with them at all times.
The SIGNAL Dunedin site will close at 11pm and reopen at 8am.
