The Future of Learning Conference 2018

Thursday August 23, 2018

It’s the first time the amazing The Future of Learning conference had been held, it was orchestrated by Dr Cheryl Doig and Hamish Duff. In this national conference, the attendees from multiple disciplines such as  educators, employees and businesses explored the changes in the future of learning and learned about the exponential technologies.

Diversity, Taskification, Career Mosaics, Purpose, Sense of Self, Agile Projects, Social Emotional Intelligence, Collaboration, and Life Long Learning, Close the Gap between the Haves & Have Nots that is growing in NZ, Micro Credentials … and that was just some of the morning topics on the first day, of the three day conference.

Some of concepts and ideas have fascinated attendees:

- The future is changing. We are not able to forecast what will happen, but can we predict possible futures based on past trends?

- The skills we need for future employees will change significantly, helping the workforce evolve and adapt in their careers will be paramount

- Immersive learning experiences - Virtual Reality will be a very effective learning tool in future of learning and will be used in many industries

- Reciprocal learning – here’s a very real potential and perhaps it’s the most fundamental idea… will the elders still have wisdom and experience to offer back to today’s youth?

The FOL Conference certainly achieved what it set out to accomplish, on highlighting the tech future of learning, exponential rate of change, the accelerating technological change on the intersecting worlds of education, business, and government. I’m sure that all of the 240 attendees,  with diverse perspectives, who bought  a wealth of knowledge and experience to the event, enjoyed the conference as much as SIGNAL did. One thing is for sure, the future of learning is bright and exciting. Watch this space!
