Industry benefits from student placements

Shift students have been putting their newly acquired skills to good use during their industry placements, providing organisations with tech solutions, while extending their own capabilities.

An integral component of the Shift programme is the 200-hour industry project.  Christchurch Shift students have worked on an array of projects, creating value for their host organisation,   including:

  • Building a cloud-based service allowing clients to build interactive data visualisation tools, and can communicate their stories through an interactive website to improve transparency and engagement with stakeholders.
  • Assisting with the development of a suite of mobile apps, consisting of new apps and remakes of older concepts. Multiple modular, reusable components were developed.
  • Developing front-end web application to create visual summaries for plant breeders and scientists to visualise and communicate the qualities of cultivars to clients and stakeholders to support decision making.
  • Assisting the software development teams to develop a web-based list that health professionals can use to manage their patient workloads.
  • Business analysis, which included systems testing, evaluating websites, evaluating feature support for ease of use for a content management system.

Host businesses were diverse, and our students had a choice regarding what style of organisation they would like to be involved with. These included fast growing start-ups, corporates, through to government agencies.  Our aim is to match talent and culture to ensure a great fit is achieved for both student and host.

Some of the organisations Signal Christchurch work with include: Plant and Food Research, Christchurch City Council, RCG Creations, Orbica, Orion Health and Cerebral Fix.

If your organisation has a project that would benefit from having a Shift student devote 200-hours to, then please contact us for more details.  We also have other project opportunities where teams of students can assist your organisation.

If you need project work completed, or are perhaps looking to hire, Signal runs a Speed meeting Event, where you get to meet the students face to face.  Please contact Lenore or phone 0800 990 024 for more information.
