Techweek'18 Highlights from Chch

And that’s a Techweek’18 wrap!

Across the 70+ events in Christchurch, from Space Challenges to Future of Fashion, Hogwarts of GIS to Digital Art, prestigious Hi-Tech Awards, Robotics, Agritech, ExportNZ, Hackathons to Extreme Environments - NZ Techweek ’18 definitely had something to interest every Cantabrian.

There were two Techweek’18 headline events in Christchurch, the winner of the NZ Space Challenge was announced on Thursday May 24 at the Extreme Environments event, and the glamorous Hi-Tech Awards ceremony was held at Horncastle Arena on the Friday night, which celebrated a range of tech successes, and highlighted the shift to a more diverse and inclusive tech sector in NZ.

SIGNAL and Christchurch Women in Tech co-hosted the screening of CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap, followed by an interesting panel discussion involving four local tech women at different stages of their career.  The panelists shared their experiences of working in Tech and also described the vast range of career opportunities, and multiple entrance paths into a tech career. The tide is turning on the gender-gap, and these women were a great testament to the changing and collaborative times ahead.

A big thank you to our panellists:

-Brenda Banning - Head Industry Innovation Advisors - JAPAC at Oracle;

-Lucy-Jane Walsh originally studied a Bachelor of Arts at Canterbury University, is now working full time as a Software Engineer.

- Hattie Compton-Moen is a Year 11 student, who interns at FabLab in Christchurch and plans to study Mechatronics or Software Engineering in the future.

-Yalini Sundralingam studied Computer Science (BSc Hons and MSc) and is a Senior Tutor teaching at the University of Canterbury.
