OrbViz and the SHIFT Students

Wednesday March 13, 2019

What started as a project with Environment Canterbury, to develop an interactive tool to visualise and communicate rates’ allocation for the public, has become OrbViz, a Software as a Service (SaaS product) from Orbica.

The tool allows data to be visualised as a series of interactive bubbles that users can explore to get a deeper understanding of the data being represented.

SHIFT 2017 student Sakinah, now a full-stack developer with Orbica has worked extensively on this project and now two more SHIFT students, Arthur McGregor and Kiriana Brown, part of the SHIFT 2018 cohort have contributed to the product.

Kiriana brought her eye for detail and user experience expertise together with Arthur's technical skills to develop the onboarding site for clients who work with OrbViz to get it up and running and populated with data. During the project, Kiriana and Arthur both had their main areas of responsibility but also took the time to help each other upskill and cross train.

Working in an agile development process, they brought work into each sprint, conducted retrospectives and provided progress reports as the project progressed. Kiriana and Arthur were given responsibility and autonomy within the project and were empowered by their supervisors to make decisions that impacted the overall outcome. Orbicans were always on hand though to provide input, mentoring and support as needed.

You can get hands on with the ECan rates tool to see the power of OrbViz at https://rates.ecan.govt.nz
