Action time! Putting the learning into action in the 'Real World'

The second Christchurch SHIFT cohort have recently started on their Industry Projects (internship). This part of the SHIFT programme sees the career changers putting their ICT learning from the first semester fundamentals and project work into practice within industry, so that they are ICT work ready on graduation. 

The projects are as diverse as the cohort, which includes graduates from science, commerce, sports physiology, mechanical engineers, medical student, hotel management, librarians and teachers.

The Industry placements include Orbica, Cerebral Fix,  Christchurch City Council and Plant & Food Research.

Arthur and Kiriana are working with high growth Christchurch location data intelligence consultancy company Orbica, who are busy creating a new product - the interns are 'researching and building a awesome customer on-boarding experience based on our customers feedback’.

Chris and Amol are on placements at the gaming company Cerebral Fix, who partner with international entertainemnt brands, and are working on testing techniques to enhance games that use HTML5. The other project utilises business analyst skills, along with investigating block-chain technologies and how they apply to the gaming sector.

Bryce and Carl are both placed with Digital Channel team at the Christchurch City Council, where they tasked with a Mobile App bundle projects with Carl focussing on the user experience side of the project. Agile skills, Web dev, UI/UX testing, Wireframing, marketing techniques and team work skills are developed even more! The guys are pumped and are very happy to get this opportunity doing what they love. 

Based at Lincoln, Chetan is full-steam ahead in his project at Plant & Food Research. Chetan is creating visual summaries of Plant Variety Data, and is working with members in (a scrum team environment) in data science and graphics team, under the guidance of his mentor John McCallum. NZ is world famous for kiwifruit, there are some really exciting opportunities happening in this sector, such as predictions that Kiwifruit is estimated to generate $6.14 billion by 2030! 

These and other SHIFT students are currently using skills learned during the SHIFT programme in these ‘Real World’ projects and in 'Real Work' environments.
