Apply now for $2000 Scholarships for 2020 Digital Technology Teacher Training

Thursday October 18, 2018

You can find out how ready you and your school are just by using the free self-review tool available at https://kiatakatu.ac.nz.  This will indicate how ready you are to implement the new curriculum content,  completing the review takes five to ten minutes and all of the results are confidential to the person.

To empower teachers to confidently deliver the new Digital Technologies | Hangarau Matihiko curriculum from Year 1- 13 ( compulsory from the start of 2020 ) SIGNAL offers the innovative Educate programme, a two year PGCertEd,  delivered through the College of Education - University of Canterbury.    The teaching team is led by award-winning educator,  Prof. Tim Bell, a world leader in computer science education within schools.

For 2020, SIGNAL is offering a number of $2000 scholarships for those enrolled in the part-time distance paper EDEM625 Teaching Computer Programming,  which forms 50% of the 'Educate' programme.    (Teachers with no programming experience are encouraged to apply, and may be required to complete a short boot camp in January 2020 - more details yet to come. )

In this paper,  you will explore what computer programming is, and various approaches to teaching it.  Aimed at both primary and secondary teachers,  or those who lead the services for such students including professional development of teachers, you will develop research skills and investigate theories and practices in programming education.

A key component is an individual research project to develop, implement and critically evaluate their teaching of programming.  'Educate' includes a 3 day intensive in Christchurch, (usually held during the Term One school holidays) and allows teaching professionals to network with their national cohort.

The scholarships are focused on building capability and diversity, especially amongst priority learners.

The SIGNAL 'Educate' scholarships will cover almost all of the course fees or can be paid to the recipient towards course-related costs.  Scholarship Applications can be found here:  https://signal.ac.nz/educate/educate-scholarship.

The scholarships are open to all those enrolling in Educate and the EDEM625 Teaching Computer Programming.    It is recommended that teachers start the UC Enrolment process as early as possible (and prior to the announcement of scholarship awards)  as there is some required documentation to compile.

If you have any questions or wish to enrol in 'Educate' please feel free to contact the team at SIGNAL ICT Graduate School on info@signal.ac.nz or phone 0800 99 0024.
