Hour of Code

Tuesday December 11, 2018

What is the Hour of Code (HoC)?

HoC started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has become a global phenomena.

This year New Zealand ran events from the far north to the deep south, in primary schools, secondary schools, and in the wider community...and it's easy to get involved.

When is the HoC?

HoC takes place each year during Computer Science Education Week, which is the first full week of December, but you can host an HoC all year-round.

HoC could be a great option at any time of year if you're a teacher needing to set last minute relief.  Activities are self guided, making for a fun and enjoyable hour for all.

How can I be involved?

There are opportunities for beginner or experienced technology teachers, or for anyone wishing to run an event.

It's quick and easy to get started, and HoC provide lots of fun tutorials and activities which are available year-round.  They also walk you through how to host an hour and provide a How-To Guide.

Remember: Minimal preparation and no prior experience needed.

What devices will I need?

Activities can be completed using any connected device, but there are also "unplugged" activities that don't require any devices at all and can be done anywhere, even outdoors.
