Industry Showcase highlights SHIFT employment outcomes for 2017 Christchurch cohort

Wednesday October 17, 2018

The recent SHIFT Industry Showcase was the perfect opportunity for fellow students, industry,  hosts, and SHIFT teaching crew to hear first hand what the Christchurch cohort have been up to this last year, particularly during their industry placements.

It was a great event, and a pleasure to hear each participant share their stories, of both their tech career development through SHIFT  and also the personal growth journey throughout the last year. The huge transformational growth in the skills and confidence of the student, as they have grown into valuable tech employees, was something that really struck a chord with many in the audience.   It was also exciting to hear last week that now all three SHIFT'ers have gained employment with their Industry hosts!  Congratulations to:

Harry Taylor, whose previous study covered Economics and Management, is now employed as a full stack Software Developer with industry project host Craig Goodenough at RCG Creations Harry mentioned that the Canterbury Tech Summit keynote speaker Harold Hillman who spoke on Authentic Leadership, had inspired him to share some of his own story of being the first in his family to go to University. It was a very personal aspect, and gave the presentation a deep and authentic connection with the audience.

Sakinah Abdul, who held a BIT, and then added industry skills through SHIFT is now employed as a full stack Software Developer for Orbica, a fast growth TIN200 firm that unlocks the value of location data to create effective business solutions and products.

Felicia Sacramento has a software engineering and air traffic control background, so it made perfect sense for her to complete her industry project with Airways, where she has subsequently landed a contract role!

Strong industry connections are vital and SIGNAL is building engagement networks, the Industry placements are carefully selected to ensure interests and backgrounds are matched to each learners goals and skills.

It is only with the support of Industry, that programmes like SHIFT can develop work-ready tech talent, so the industry mentors and hosts were acknowledged as being vital.

If you are in Christchurch, and your organisation would like the opportunity to host a SHIFT student in the new year, come along on Wednesday November 14,  to the SHIFT Speed Meeting and Networking Event at Signal Christchurch from 2.30 - 4pm.   This is a great opportunity to meet the current Christchurch cohort and see if you have a project which would benefit from 200 hours of talented and mature SHIFT student time.   To find out more, please contact Lenore or call 0800 99 00 24.
