2017 @ SIGNAL: Student success, tech industry partnerships and community engagement

Wednesday December 20, 2017

The release this week of the long awaited NZTech Digital Skills Survey has quantified what many in industry already know... the NZ tech sector is extremely important to our economy, it is growing rapidly, and there is a shortfall in tech skills in our workforce.    With calls to increase our digital skills base through ten recommended action points, it is great to see that SIGNAL is already ahead of the game on many of these.

SIGNAL's 2017 Educate cohort of school teachers from around NZ will be resting up after a busy year developing their digital tech teaching skills whilst in the classroom.   It is interesting to note that this cohort started before the new digital technologies curriculum was proposed for 2018, so they will be well placed to lead this in their schools next year.  Enrolments for the 2018 intake close at the end of January, so please contact us to find out more on this distance-learning at-work programme. SIGNAL scholarships for Educate close on January 15.

Congratulations to our very first Dunedin SHIFT cohort, who have finished their studies and are now working in local industry to complete their 400 hour paid placement - an additional opportunity to gain valuable industry experience.

The Christchurch SHIFT cohort have completed semester one studies and amazing collaborative project work and are looking forward to jumping into their individual industry placements early next year.

Excellent results within SHIFT so far has earned Felicia Sacramento the 2017 Synapsys Christmas Gift award. Read more about Felicia's award here.

The SHIFT 2018 cohorts for both sites are looking very strong; both in terms of numbers and in the varied range of ages, skills and career interests within tech.  There are still a small number of spaces available on SHIFT 2018 at both sites, so if you know someone who is considering shifting to a tech career, please contact us

The Xtend cohort has grown with new learners from around NZ.  Even though they are at various stages through Xtend, the learners and their organisations are already reaping the benefits of this in-work professional development offering that focuses on embedding a workplace project, process or innovation.  2018 will also see exciting developments in SIGNAL's other industry learning areas, following on from the success of our industry workshops in November. Stay tuned for more info.

SIGNAL has been part of many events this year... on-site and at industry gatherings, careers expos, community events, educational conferences, international student visits and through many other channels. Check out the 2017 event photo gallery for some of the highlights!

Looking ahead... be sure to mark Tech Week 2018 on your calendars, running May 19 - 27.  This nation-wide series of events will have something for all ages, and will showcase our tech capabilities and industries, and inspire and connect our communities. Read more about Techweek and how to be involved here.

Both SIGNAL spaces will close on Thurs Dec 21, and will be contactable via phone 0800 990 024 and info@signal.ac.nz  from Wednesday January 3.  The entire team will be back on board from January 15, fresh and ready for another busy year.

Finally we would like to sincerely thank everyone who has been a part of our year... our learners, teaching staff, industry partners, and collaborators for their efforts this year. It has been a fantastically successful and productive  year and we look forward to even greater achievements in 2018.

Meri Kirihimete | Merry Christmas

And all the very best for 2018!
