If youre an employer you probably want to hire experienced staff. Pretty much everyone wants to hire experienced staff. We produce a lot of talented graduates in New Zealand, but they sometimes get caught in a cycle where they cant get a job because they dont have work experience, but they cant get work experience because they dont have a job. Internships a period of real work within a firm during or at the end of study can be a really valuable way of breaking that cycle and helping students become the experienced workers you want to hire.

Over 2000 attendees at Dunedin's NZ Techweek'18 events

The numbers are in! Dunedin Techweek'18 included over 2300 attendees at 46 individual events across the city. The city hosted 6 international speakers, 28 national speakers, and 52 local speakers at 24 venues around the city, and over 50 local tech and associated businesses were involved. From Pete Hodgson, Chair of Callaghan Innovation, to primary school students designing games or trouble shooting apps, to amazing local businesses getting together to share ideas and experiences with each other, it was a fabulous week of conversation, discovery and collaboration.

Now into their second semester of SHIFT, Felicia, Dewi, Sam, Harry and Sakinah are well into their workplace industry projects with five Christchurch companies, from game design to air traffic control and location data intelligence specialists.

The February Shift cohort of nine has been busy visiting local companies, gaining insight into various tech roles, and the skills needed to work in the growing tech sector. The students have also completed an intensive introduction to programming and further technical skills, and have begun working on projects in the studio to put their new found skills into practice.

The new Digital Technologies|Hangarau Matihiko curriculum goes live this year, with NZ schools expected to fully integrate the revised learning area into their curriculum by the start of the 2020 school year. From the Ministry of Education website: "The goal of this change is to ensure that all learners have the opportunity to become digitally capable individuals. This change signals the need for greater focus on our students building their skills so they can be innovative creators of digital solutions, moving beyond solely being users and consumers of digital technologies." SIGNAL's Educate programme assists current teachers to implement the latest curriculum.

The change will equip young learners for the increasingly digitalised workplace and society. As part of this change, there is a need to upskill teachers with the necessary knowledge and capability to implement these changes. SIGNAL's Educate programme enables teachers to deliver the Computer Science and Computer Programming strands of the Digital Technologies curriculum in schools.
