SIGNAL Dunedin celebrates International Women's Day 2020

Thursday March 5, 2020

Unemployment rate for women IT graduates in Gaza is more than 90%. Rasha Abu-Safieh decided to do something about it.

Awarded 2018 Time Magazine's Next Generation Leader, Rasha will share her incredible story of fighting unemployment in Gaza, by connecting young Palestinian's with the world and providing hope to over 600 tech-savvy Gaza youth.

"They didn't expect someone from Gaza to be like me. But I don't care about politics. I care about humans."

Driven by the desire to create social impact modelling that maximizes social impact and drive real change, Rasha has over 14 years’ work experience including 7 years as co-founder of GGateway - an Impact sourcing social enterprise in Palestine. Launched in 2012 as part of the U.N.’s agency for Palestinian refugees, GGatway gets around restrictions on the territory by connecting tech-savvy Gazans to companies with remote working opportunities. Rasha and her co-founder has helped 620 young Gazans build tech-based careers. In May 2018 they secured $3 million from the World Bank to turn GGateway into a regional hub for the digital economy.

Rasha was featured in Time Magazine as Next-Generation Leader in October 2018 and is New Frontier Fellow for the Edmund Hillary Fellowship 2019, in Wellington.

We can actively choose to challenge stereotypes, fight bias, broaden perceptions, improve situations and celebrate women's achievements. Equality is not a women's issue, it's a business issue, and gender equality is essential for economies and communities to thrive.

A gender equal world can be healthier, wealthier and more harmonious - so what's not great about that?
