Welcome SHIFT 2020 July Cohorts!

Sunday July 12, 2020

Our SHIFT students decide to career-change or upskill for a myriad of reasons, such as boosting employability, future-proofing, redundancy, for the challenge of learning, personal growth and to progress in their career. But with the global pandemic causing disruption across the globe, our world is changing faster than ever before and people are looking for a convenient way to upskill and reskill relatively quickly to meet this change.

The SHIFT programme enables people to change careers or to add tech to their existing degree, so they can enter the exciting tech sector in just one year. This month we're excited to welcome over 20 new full-time and part-time SHIFT students across Christchurch and Dunedin, ready to make that change. These new students are taking the plunge, shifting gears and learning relevant tech skills and exploring new opportunities in the tech sector, following in the footsteps of our dozens of successful graduates.

The July 2020 cohort's career backgrounds are diverse. From fresh graduates, parents reskilling, business owners and career changers. Their educational and career backgrounds are varied, which brings many different perspectives and experiences to the learning environment.

Backgrounds include:

The first six weeks of the fully immersive full days of the SHIFT programme covers the tech fundamentals, and the cohort will also be engaging with the local tech industry during SHIFT Fridays.

SIGNAL knows that nothing develops your skills and builds confidence like applying your skills on something real! That's why we focus a lot of time also on projects and workshop based learning. This semester this SHIFT cohort will also focus on industry inspired projects; the students will apply the skills they learnt during the tech fundamentals and consolidate and refine them whilst delivering some real value for a client. Learning by doing!

To conclude SHIFT, all students will complete a 200-hour industry placement, commencing 2021. Please contact Lenore Wright on (Christchurch) or Kylie Jackson on (Dunedin) if you could accommodate one of our students to work on a value adding project for your organisation.

We wish all our students well during their studies, and as they venture into the world of tech!

If you or someone you know is considering a career change, or wondering what opportunities the world of tech offers, please get in touch with one of our friendly team to discuss career options.

Our next SHIFT intake is February 2021 in Christchurch and Dunedin.
