Christchurch based Orbica, a location data intelligence solutions company, continues to go from strength to strength. Orbica are open to new ways of thinking, hiring and are building a company that leads the way into the future.
So it is not surprising to hear they have been announced as finalists for not one, but two NZ 2020 Hi-Tech Awards categories, recognising outstanding innovation, contribution and success in New Zealand's hi-tech sector.
The strength of the finalists across all categories is a great indicator of the high level of talent and innovation across NZ's fast growing tech sector.
Since 2017, Orbica have provided SIGNAL with strong industry support for our SHIFT students. This includes industry projects, mentorship and work placements. SHIFT students have primarily worked on the OrbViz product which is a finalist in the Duncan Cotterill Innovative Hi-Tech Software Solution Award in this years Hi-Tech Awards.
In particular, SHIFT graduates Sakinah Adbul and Arthur McGregor who have since become full time Orbicans on the Orbica team, have been responsible for the full stack development work on OrbViz.
At the end of 2017, Sakinah Abdul was placed with Orbica to complete a 200-hour work placement, and went on to become a full-time full-stack developer in the Orbica team.
"Sakinah gained her industry savvy from Signal ICT Grad School. She loves nothing better than a job well done and seeing good code come to life on-screen" - The Orbicans.
2018 SHIFT graduate, Arthur McGregor, became the second SIGNAL graduate to join the Orbica team. He has a civil engineering degree, taught high school physics for nine years and is now "getting his tech on" as a full-stack developer at Orbica.
We would like to wish Orbica the best of luck as finalists for the following 2020 Hi-Tech Award categories:
- Duncan Cotterill Innovative Hi-Tech Software Solution Award
- Kiwibank Hi-Tech Innovative Services Award
2020 marks the 25th anniversary of the NZ Hi-Tech Awards. Finalists will be announced at the Hi-Tech Awards Gala Dinner, scheduled for the 22 May. If the Awards are unable to go ahead as planned on that date, the event will proceed at a later date.
