Exciting industry projects commence for first Christchurch SHIFT cohort

Thursday April 5, 2018

The SHIFT cohort are completing elective papers at Ara, Lincoln University and the University of Canterbury to develop deeper skills in an area of focus whilst also completing an industry project with a local tech firm. They have been working for several weeks now and share some of their experiences so far.

Felicia is "loving my placement at Airways because I am surrounded with experts who support my learning in many positive ways. There are several enhancements that need to be addressed in their system and I am working on the Python code to resolve these."

Dewi is investigating Content Management Systems to update the  CerebralFix website. She is enjoying the fact that she gets an opportunity to have "a real work experience in an iconic Christchurch company."

Sam is delivering  information systems solutions at Brighter Days. She enjoys the fact that "no two days are the same and I'm constantly learning something new every day under the guidance of the lovely team at Brighter Days."

Harry is currently working an an automation platform for an ISP, particularly helping with the customer-facing web portal at RCG Creations. His industry supervisor is Craig Goodenough - "Harry is a great example of the high quality interns that the Signal ICT programme provides its industry partners. He is motivated and works well within our team and he has a particular eye for detail."

Sakinah loves working at Orbica. "Every day I learn new things we can do with GIS and location-data. The team members are passionate and helpful. There was one evening where I lost track of time and ended going home late because I had fun listening and discussing one of my ideas with them - over triangles on a web map."

Her industry supervisor, Louisa Taylor, notes that "Sakinah told us during her interview that she wanted to work on her communications skills and we thought Orbica would be a great place to practice. Sakinah is now happily debating solution approaches, coding creatively and drawing from the skills of many team members."

We look forward to the SHIFT Industry Showcase later this year, where the group will present their industry work.
