SHIFT making a difference to local firms

Friday September 1, 2017

Jonathan Manning has always had an interest in media, so he was thrilled when the the opportunity arose to gain experience with the team at The Tarn Group, a Dunedin based software development firm with five world class brands, covering a range of health, sporting and educational software products.

Jonathan's project is to research and implement audio options into 'Bracken', a customisable online education delivery platform used by many organisations globally, including Otago Polytechnic.

Working alongside experienced software developer David Templeton, Jonathan has loved the chance to add an additional feature to an already excellent product, and is currently in the testing stage.   David is impressed with the progress made already, and is looking forward to working with Jonathan to complete the implementation phase.

Jonathan's degree in Philosophy has been very useful during SHIFT, especially with regard to  critical thinking, research and communication skills, all of which are highly valued within the tech sector.

James Nation, CEO of The Tarn Group is adamant that hosting interns adds value to the workplace, as they can bring in fresh ideas and a different approach.  It is also a way of helping give something back to the city's technology community, and allows completion of low priority or 'wishlist' type projects, that can add value to the business.

SIGNAL will soon be calling for submissions for Industry projects for the 2018 SHIFT cohorts in both Christchurch and Dunedin, so have a think about how a SHIFT intern could add value to your organisation.
