SHIFT Profile: Jonathan Manning

Wednesday August 21, 2019

Jonathan (Jono) was looking for a way to combine his interest in the humanities and sciences when he came across SIGNAL. He studied Philosophy where he became curious about big questions in ethics, politics, power and knowledge, and after working in different jobs including retail and video editing, he was ready for a change.

“SHIFT appealed to me immensely because it blended humanities and science in a way that I always thought was valuable and that spoke to my interests.  I think the projects were practical and useful for industry.   I learnt how to design, prototype and deliver in a short time frame, and this can be applied to small businesses, or teams within a larger organisation just as effectively. Learning to work with a customer centred design focus is valued in digital industries today.”

"I appreciated the industry contacts I gained through SIGNAL with The Tarn Group, Hatch, and others. ”

Following SHIFT,  Jono's first role was as an analyst for Meltwater Media Intelligence,  and in February this year he moved to Wellington to join the GovTech Graduate programme,  working at NZTA on Cloud Services, Change Management and Service Automation.

“SHIFT allowed me to formalise my lifelong interest in computers and opened the digital door for me.”
